Sarah May - Founder & CEO

I founded The Last Resort Animal Sanctuary Inc. because I have always believed that some people are born to protect — and this is how I have chosen to live that truth.

This work has never felt separate from who I am. Long before there was a nonprofit or a name for what I was building, caring for vulnerable animals was already part of my daily life. It has shaped my values, my choices, and the way I move through the world.

For decades, I have devoted myself to animals who are overlooked, misunderstood, or affected by age, medical needs, or circumstance. Through them, I have learned that safety is powerful, patience is healing, and love — when paired with consistency — can change everything.

I created The Last Resort as a boutique sanctuary model grounded in intention, dignity, and permanence. Here, animals are not rushed or defined by their past. They are given the gift of time, gentle routines, and a calm environment where trust can grow again.

While I am honored to lead this mission, it is truly sustained by the people beside me. I am surrounded by extraordinary individuals — leaders, advocates, and volunteers whose hearts are generous and whose dedication is unwavering. Their compassion, strength, and resilience bring this sanctuary to life each day.

Equally essential to this work is my deeply valued Board of Directors. Each member was thoughtfully chosen not only for their experience and insight, but for their character and heart. They are steady, wise, and profoundly committed to the mission. I lean on them with trust and gratitude, knowing that their guidance, perspective, and belief in this sanctuary strengthen every decision we make. Their presence allows this work to grow with care and integrity.

My background in education and leadership helps guide how the sanctuary operates, bringing clarity, organization, and long-term vision to our daily practices. We operate without salaries so that every donation directly supports veterinary care, enrichment, and the environments that make lifelong sanctuary possible.

This sanctuary is not simply something I oversee — it is something I was meant to build. It exists through love, collaboration, and a shared promise to protect the lives entrusted to us with compassion and devotion.
